The Top 5 Sights Of Northern Ireland's North Coast

First, we exit the highway at Armoy and travel through the countryside for approximately 65 minutes until we reach our first stop.

 

The magnificent Dark Hedges is the first stop. These 300-year-old Beech trees form one of the world's top five tree tunnels, which were made famous by the television show Game of Thrones. The time here is approximately 30 minutes.

 

The second stop is the Carrick-A-Reed Rope Bridge, which requires walking shoes. It's a 1km walk to and from the bridge over uneven terrain, so bring your head for heights! The time here is approximately 120 minutes, and tickets must be purchased in advance.

Ballintoy Harbour is the third stop... Take a walk along the pier or into the caves; this picturesque harbour was also used in the HBO television series Game of Thrones. The time here is approximately 30 minutes.

​

The fourth stop is The Giants Causeway, Northern Ireland's most popular tourist attraction. Climb the ancient hexagonal basalt rocks that cover our coastline and are Northern Ireland's only Unesco World Heritage Site, or walk along the coastal path. During peak hours, a bus runs up and down to the rocks and is payable locally, allowing even those in wheelchairs or with mobility issues to see the rocks. The time here is approximately 120 minutes. To enter the visitors centre, tickets must be purchased in advance; however, no tickets are required to travel down to see the rocks.

The fifth stop is the 15th century Dunluce Castle, perched precariously on the cliffs overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Approximately 30 minutes The castle ruins require advance purchase of tickets, but walking around is free.

From here, it's a 75-minute drive back to Belfast.

The Giant's Causeway And North Antrim Coast Tour

We first take the motorway to Ballymena, then exit at Armoy and travel through the countryside until we reach our first stop of the day.

 

The Dark Hedges tree tunnel (These 300-year-old beech trees make an excellent tree tunnel and were also used on HBO's Game of Thrones).

 

Carrick-A-Reed Rope Bridge viewing point (this 17th century rope ridge spans over 60ft long above a 100ft drop); tickets for this bridge must be purchased in advance if you wish to cross, and more time must be added to this tour.

Ballintoy Harbour (a beautiful scenic harbour with rugged rocks and lime caves that was also used in HBO's Game Of Thrones)

 

Drive along the scenic North Antrim Coastal Road.

 

White Park Bay (A stunning view of a golden sandy beach on the North Atlantic Coast)

 

Ruins of Dunservrick Castle (Although not much remains of this ancient castle, it is still interesting to visit.)

The Giant's Causeway (Northern Ireland's only UNESCO World Heritage Site), also known as the World's 8th Wonder. These hexagonal rocks cover our spectacular coast line and are a must see (tickets to the visitors centre must be booked in advance, but the centre is not required to enter).

 

Lunch at the Causeway Hotel (We will have lunch here at this 18th century hotel which is full of character and serves a beautiful hot lunch and drinks or if you want teas or coffees and a beautiful scone)

Bushmills Village (A beautiful little town with shops and cafes should you wish to have a quick look around for that all important souvenir time dependent)

 

Dunluce Castle Viewing Point (This castle perched on the North Coast's cliffs was built in the 1500s and has been abandoned since the 1600s. To enter the ruins, tickets must be purchased in advance, and more time must be added to this tour.

Stop & Shop at Bushmills Distillery (The world's oldest licensed distillery began producing whiskey in 1608.) You will only have a few minutes to walk around and shop. If you want to taste whiskey, we'll need to see how much time we have left, and if you want to do the distillery tour, tickets must be purchased in advance and more time added to the tour).

 

The time has come to return you to your pickup location, and the trip to Belfast from here will take 75 minutes.

​

Please keep in mind that this tour is approximately 7 hours long (no ticketed events) from pickup to drop off, and whether we can fit everything in depends on weather, queuing, and meal times, but we will do our best.

The Giant's Causeway And North Antrim Coast Tour

Starting at the magnificent Carrickfergus Castle and continuing along the coast to Larne harbour, we'll be on the Giant's Causeway coastal road.

 

We travel along this beautiful scenic coastal road, stopping at towns and villages for photo opportunities.

 

Stop 1: Carrickfergus Castle photo opportunity and a short walk. This magnificent castle, built in the 1100s, is one of Ireland's best-preserved castles and plays an important role in the country's history.

 

Whitehead drives by, The lighthouse. It can be seen in the distance just off the coast.

 

Larne drives by. If you want to travel to Scotland by passenger ferry, P&O departs from this large town on the coast.

 

Ballygally village - Ballygally Castle, reputed to be Ireland's oldest occupied building, is said to be haunted. It was constructed in 1625.

​

Every castle must have at least one ghost of some kind, and the Ballygally is said to have as many as three! The most well-known, The Ghost of Ballygally Castle, has been around for nearly 400 years. According to popular belief, the ghost is that of Lady Isabella Shaw, Lord James Shaw's wife.

​

Stop 2: Glenarm village and castle walls. Randale McDonald, 10th Earl of Antrim, lives in this 1750s castle.

​

Carnlough harbour and refreshments are the third stop. This charming fishing village is home to the Londonderry Arms Hotel, which has a rich history and was also the home of Paddy the pigeon and a Game of Thrones filming location.

 

Drive through Waterfoot Village. This lovely little village sits at the base of Glenariff, one of Antrim's Glens.

​

Drive through Cushendall village. At the foot of Glenaan, Glenballyemon, and Glencorp, three Antrim Glens. In addition, the Curfew Tower in the village centre was built by Francis Turnley in 1817 to confine riotous prisoners.

 

Drive through Ballycastle town. It is located next to the most northern Glen Of Antrim Glentaisie and is the location of the ferry that takes you across to Rathlin Island.

Carrick-A-Reed Rope Bridge viewing point (Stop 4). This bridge spans over 60ft to Carrick-A-Reed Island and hangs nearly 100ft above the rocks and water, making it one of our most famous landmarks. The bridge was first constructed in the 1600s. Please keep in mind that we do not usually cross the bridge, and if you want to do so, we will need to change the tour and possibly add more time to the tour at an additional cost and the cost of tickets. (Tickets must be reserved in advance.)

 

Ballintoy harbour is stop number five. This beautiful harbour, with its sandy beach and rugged coastline, is stunning in any weather and was also used in the TV series Game of Thrones.

​

Stop 6: The ruins of Dunseverick Castle. Builtin 500 BC, this very old castle ruins may not have much left to see as it hangs on the Atlantic Ocean cliffs, but it is still beautiful.

 

Stop 7: The Giant's Causeway (Northern Ireland's only UNESCO world heritage site, also known as the world's eighth wonder). These hexagonal rocks cover our spectacular coast line and are a must see (tickets to the visitors centre must be booked in advance, but the centre is not required to enter).

Lunch at the Causeway Hotel is stop number eight. This place serves delicious teas and coffees, as well as freshly baked scones. A great lunch menu that is not overpriced is also available. If you get thirsty, they have some great beers and spirts. There is a must-try Baileys Hot Chocolate or Baileys Coffee.

 

Drive through Bushmills town. This small town on the banks of the river has some great little shops.
